A brief bit about us

Derek Plummer Chartered Architect was formed in January 1987 in Richmond upon Thames. Prior to the establishment of this firm, Derek Plummer was a partner in charge of architecture in a firm of architects, engineers and surveyors in St Pancras. The late senior partner of that firm was a surveyor, architect and structural engineer, who was one of the only two people in the country, at that time, to hold all the three professional qualifications.  The firm provided services for a wide range of buildings, including:
  • Industrial buildings (example: 13 steel stockholding warehouses)
  • A director’s dining room
  • A photographer’s studio
  • The first equivalent of quinquennial surveys for the RC Diocese of Westminster
  • Reports and works to churches, presbyteries and sacristies
  • A new church
  • Shops and offices
  • Conversion of a jewellery factory
  • A new dining room for the metropolitan police in Hendon
  • House conversions for the GLC and later for the London Residuary Body
  • Multi-storey block improvements (to reduce vandalism) for the GLC & LRB in Lambeth
  • House conversions in the LB of Islington
  • Conversion work for LB Camden
  • Sundry conversions and alterations for listed buildings of all grades (Grade I, II* and II) and also for some well-known clients, including the late Roy Plomley (who started 'Desert Island Discs') Sting, Sir Trevor MacDonald, Steve Hackett (former lead guitarist at Genesis) and two ambassadors.
we also worked on the restoration and conversion of a semi-derelict chapel

The Dutch barge

The conversion of a Dutch barge built in Holland in 1908 for the River Thames Boat Project. Designed to provide trips for everyone. The barge features bunks that are used for residential trips and educational projects. It has been taking people to river trips for many years. Photo by John Frye.

Our initial projects and accomplishments

Derek Plummer Chartered Architect is a general practice. We like to work for clients who have unusual and interesting projects. We have worked on possibly the smallest project in Richmond for the Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames together with the Borough of Richmond. For the same trust, we also worked on the restoration and conversion of a semi-derelict chapel, which had seven holes in the roof, trees growing out of the walls and fully occupied by pigeons. The project won a local Richmond Society Award. We entered a competition with a local builder for a block of flats in Hampton Hill. We won the competition and built 18 flats and a local 'pocket park'. We later added 3 more flats. We were consulted by late Sir Christopher Brasher about the famous Petersham Meadows and made a presentation to his trust for the conversion and extension of the former dairy and made recommendations for the protection of the meadows. Unfortunately, Brasher died very shortly afterwards and the Petersham Trust handed over the meadows to the National Trust. We lost the job but the future of the meadows was safeguarded. We are keen to work with clients to design exceptional individual contemporary houses on interesting sites. We held an exhibition at POSK Gallery in Hammersmith about Wooden Houses. In the same week in June 2019 we ran a workshop as part of the Festival of London Architecture 2019.
